CML: Hi Lee, it’s an honour to interview a dj famous as you!
L.V.D: You’re welcome my dear :-)

CML: Your real name is Renaud, why did you decide to use the artistic name Lee?
L.V.D: My real name is Renaud Lewandowski. Lee Van Dowski came naturally as i’m a big fan of westerns and of Lee Van Cleef :-)

CML: When did you start to interest to music? You are a sound-engenieer, so i think that music play a role foundamental in your life since you were young…who made you discover and appreciate the music?
L.V.D: Since i can remember i’ve always been interested by music. My step father had a huge eclectic record collection, so he made me listen all sort of musics from classical, pop rock, funk, to concrete music really early. When i was a teenager, i started to play guitar with some friends in a band, just for fun, i was dreaming to become a guitar hero, but it never happened hehe. Then one day in 93, a friend brang me to a strange party in open air……with a dj who daesn’t talk during the set, 2000 peoples was dancing like hell till the morning:) It was my first rave party. Since this day, i knew that it was the thing i’d love to do, and i’ve put my all energy in this.

CML: Your sound it’s very minimal!! What do you think about this minimal wave that has arrived also here in italy? Do you think that this minimal-style it’s only a temporary trend or not?
L.V.D: Minimal is just an easy way to catalog this sound. Most of the tracks called “minimal” are not so minimal, lots of layers and sounds are composing those songs…….personnaly, i don’t feel i’m doing minimal music. I think minimal music is just the natural evolution of techno. Lot of peoples have been bored with the big techno tracks of the 90’s, all about 140 bpm with full of snares and aggressive hhats, and everybody are now getting older hehe.

CML: What do you say to a young dj who want to emerge?
L.V.D: Hmmm, to always believe into what he’s doing, to work everyday and don’t take this as a hobby.

CML: For us, the image of a dj is a guy who enjoy all the people with music, travel all around the world, know a lot of people…which are the others aspect that we don’t know?
L.V.D: Yeah, that’s the glamour’s view of dj :-) Of course we have all this every weekend, it’s a dream to be pay for what you love to do. I’m receiving so many good vibes by all the people i meet…..i really can’t complain :-) The bad side, is all the travels, airport are becoming your second house, waiting is our second job beside djing…….and of course, it’s exhausting when you are playing 2 or three dates in a weekend.

CML: Which is your relation with your fans? Are you that kind of dj that spent some words with his fans or, when your set finish, you go away?
L.V.D: No i’m always staying when i’m able to. I love after partys when i can meet people more closer than in a big club :-)

CML: And about internet? What do you think about? It’s only a way of research or a vehicle to let you know?
L.V.D: Internet is now a must in this business. For running my two labels, composing, taking care of bookings, all is throught the net, and to be honest, i’m totally addicted, can’t have a day without checking my mails.

CML: In this internet era, somebody say that djs are the real uncontested artists because all your sets present on internet are always different and you mix music and technique…do you think it’s true?
L.V.D: Yes of course, i could give my flycase to another dj now, and i’m sure he won’t play the same set as me, we all have our style and our personnality.

CML: Who are the djs that most influenced you, now? And in the past?
L.V.D: Hmmmm there’s so many djs i really love…..i can’t tell you some names like this cause it’s a reduced view of my taste :)

CML: What is the craziest thing that you have experience in a club?
L.V.D: All weekends have something special, i’m travelling for three days and it looks like i left for one week :-) But parties in berlin are all always freaky. We’re starting on friday and finishing on tuesday….so you can easily imagine all the crazy things wich can happens hehe.

CML: What other productions do you have in store for the future?
L.V.D: Have lots of things planned, 2 new eps on Soma, a ep on my label 60 sec, another one on my other label num, and some other remixes :-)

CML: Which production makes you satisfied?
L.V.D: All the productions i do with my friends :-)

CML: How about your relation with the vinyls…do you prefer them or digital music? Do you use hardware or software?
L.V.D: I’m a kind of old school dj, i love playing vinyls, but now the technology with serato with playing mp3 or waves, is getting really cool. I guess i will buy this soon, to have it more over the vinyls.

CML: If you use a software, do you prefer Abletone or other?
L.V.D: Of course i’m using ableton for playing live, but i’m not using it for production. I prefer logic or reason when i’m in studio.

CML: Which is your favourite club where you have played?
L.V.D: I love lots of clubs like Panorama in berlin, harry klein in munich, hive club in zurick, the arches in glasgow, cassero in bologna etc….. but in the end, it’s the crowd who is doing the party, a shitty club could have a crazy party because the peoples freaks out.

CML: And, about italian fans, what do you think about? which are the most increbile fans for whom you have played?
L.V.D: All the parties i played in italy was totally crazy, italians knows how to party………i love to come over, and the food is probably the best ever :-)

CML: Thanks a lot for your time, we hope to listen you as soon as possible here in italy again!
L.V.D: As soon as possible please :-)
